Winchester, VA – Saint Kinga, also called Cunegonde, is the patroness of Poland and Lithuania. She was born in 1224, the daughter of King Bela IV of Hungary. Her sisters are  Saint Margaret of Hungary and Blessed Jolenta of Poland. But her saintly connections do not end there! She was also the niece of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and great grand-niece of Saint Hedwig. It was arranged that Kinga would marry Boleslav V, known as “the chaste,” (and brother to Blessed Salomea of Poland) and they agreed upon living a Josephite marriage. As Grand Duchess, Kinga lived her Christianity profoundly, visiting the poor, and ministering to the lepers. Upon the death of High Duke Boleslav, she sold all her possessions, donated the proceeds to the poor, and joined the Poor Clares. Kinga distanced herself from her previous role as Grand Duchess and spent her life in contemplative prayer. She died in 1292. Saint Kinga, pray for us!
