Winchester, VA – Saint Helena was the mother of the Emperor Constantine. Born in Bithynia in 330, she was married to Constantius, a Roman general, who was made Caesar, or junior emperor, in 293. Constantius later divorced Helena to marry another woman, and their son, Constantine, became Augustus, or emperor, in 306. She returned to the imperial court in 312, and in 325 was named Augusta Imperiatrix, which meant empress. She converted to Christianity, and built churches throughout Rome and the Holy Land. Constantine gave her complete access to the imperial treasure so that she could find lost relics of Christianity. During one pilgrimage to the Holy Land, she had destroyed a pagan temple that stood over Jesus’ tomb, and discovered the True Cross upon which Our Lord was crucified. She died around 330. Saint Helena, pray for us!
