Winchester, VA – John of Matha was the founder of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity, an order which, under the patronage of Our Lady of Good Remedy, is dedicated to ransoming Christians being held captive. He was born around 1160 in Faucon-de-Barcelonnette, on the border of Provence, to noble parents and was named for St. John the Baptist. He was given a traditional education fit for young nobility, and was noted for the donations he would give to the poor out of the money that his parents would send him. John was ordained in 1192, and during his first Mass, had a vision of Christ holding two chained captives by the hand. One was a Moor. One was a Christian. The Christian carried a staff with a blue and red cross. John realized his calling to ransom Christians from Moorish captivity. After a second vision, he and St. Felix of Valois set out to get the blessing of Pope Innocent III on their new order, which was approved in 1209. It is said he personally met St. Francis of Assisi before his death in 1213. St. John of Matha, pray for us!
