Winchester, VA – In this Celestial Musings, Democrat Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam and Republican politician Ed Gillespie are vying for the governorship of the commonwealth of Virginia. With a week to go until the election, a nasty political ad was launched depicting a group of minority children fleeing from a pickup truck which is clearly chasing after them bearing a Gillespie bumper sticker and a license plate with the Gadsden Flag symbol on it. This scene turns out to be a bad dream of multiple minority children, who startle awake in bed and need comforting by their parents. Then a voiceover says “Is this what Donald Trump and Ed Gillespie mean by ‘The American Dream.’?” As a resident of Virginia I am appalled, but, sadly, not surprised. Every state has its racist bigots, but in no way is Ed Gillespie one of them. I can only agree with him in his assessment that if an ad like this is being dropped now, it’s only because the race is uncomfortably tight, and for that I am grateful. Looking at the polling results on Real Clear Politics, while many polls show Northam ahead, a few have Gillespie gaining a very recent edge. As for me, I know what I’ll be doing next Tuesday.
