Winchester, VA – Reuters reports that as the fighting in the Old City in Mosul has been intensifying, the ISIS fighters have taken the drastic action of blowing up the Grand al-Nuri Mosque, which not only has served as a headquarters for them, but is where Abu Bakr al Baghdadi declared the Iraqi caliphate back in 2014. They also destroyed its famous leaning minaret. The numbers of ISIS fighters remaining is now roughly 300, down from 6000, and about 100,000 people are still trapped in Mosul under deplorable conditions. Reuters Foreign Affairs Correspondent Yara Bayoumy gave some insight as to why they blew up this landmark.
