Winchester, VA – The Jones Act is a piece of legislation which limits shipping between United States coasts to U.S.-flagged vessels. When Hurricanes Harvey and Irma struck Texas and Florida respectively, the Jones Act was suspended by the Department of Homeland Security so that aid could get to the storm ravaged states quickly. In order to do this, the Department of Defense needed to request a waiver for those particular states. CNN reports that no such waiver had been filed by the DOD for Puerto Rico. Governor Ricardo Rossello of Puerto Rico yesterday requested that the Jones Act be lifted to aid Puerto Rico relief efforts, and White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed via twitter this morning that President Trump has authorized the Jones Act to be waived for Puerto Rico effective immediately. Senator John McCain’s office claimed that the Jones Act had the unintended consequence of making it cost twice as much to ship supplies from the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico as it would cost from any other foreign port in the world.
