Winchester, VA – You might be asking yourself, so is the Chair of Peter an actual piece of furniture, or is the Feast of the Chair of Peter about the significance of St. Peter’s position as appointed by Christ. Well, the answer is, both. The chair itself is an ancient wooden chair, located at St. Peter’s Basilica, which was said to have been used by Saint Peter himself. It was covered over in bronze by the artist Bernini in the mid-17th century. Today’s feast celebrates the authority of St. Peter represented by this seat. Jesus, in chapter 16 of St. Matthew’s gospel declares Peter to be the rock upon which He will build His Church. St. Peter, head of the apostles, went to Rome, and was regarded as head of the Church of Rome. With Peter having the primacy of place amongst the apostles, the see of Rome was regarded as the spiritual head  of the Church, and the See of the Successor of St. Peter, the first Pope. St. Peter, pray for the Holy Father, and for us!
