WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF YOUNG SOCIAL ACTIVISTS TURNED THEIR ATTENTION TO ECONOMICS?

Winchester, VA – In this Celestial Musings, TheConversation.com posted an article which explains that a 2016 Harvard University poll shows that 51% of youth aged 18-29 no longer support capitalism. 42% considered themselves supporters of capitalism but only 19% were willing to call themselves capitalists. The 51% dissatisfaction figure is 13% higher than it was 8 years ago, right after the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Interestingly, or frighteningly should I say, a full 33% of respondents support socialism. But overall the piece says young people don’t want less capitalism, they want more of it, and they want it “shared more broadly, such as by making it easier to more of us to become capitalits and share in the wealth we collectively create.” Might this be the generation to pick up the banner of distributism, whose hallmarks are widespread property ownership, broad distribution of the means of production, subsidiarity, solidarity, and the subordination of economics to our spiritual, intellectual and family lives? I don’t know if it will, but one can hope, right?
