Winchester, VA – In this Celestial Musings, there was an op-ed piece in the Washington Post on March 9 entitled “I would’ve aborted a fetus with Down syndrome. Women need that right.” First, nobody “needs” a right to kill any unborn baby, in fact no such right exists. This woman says that Down syndrome babies are cute, cherished by their parents and can live long and happy lives, and in the same breath says that if her baby were diagnosed with Trisomy 21, she would have undergone a—in her words-”ghastly” second trimester abortion, grieved the loss and moved on.” “Oh I’m sorry little Johnny, that you didn’t make the cut. You’re not perfect enough a child for me—I didn’t sign up for somebody like you. Bummer. Now let’s move along.” What if this lady’s child developed a condition giving him or he lifelong health challenges, mental impairments and lowered life expectancy after the birth? Would she fight to kill her child then? Or do you get the death penalty for imperfections only before you’re born?
