Winchester, VA – The Guardian reports that over 2,300 suspected Islamic militants were to appear in court today in what will be a series of mass trials against the insurgency group known as Boko Haram, whose name means “no to western education.” The authorities are hoping that this will provide proof of their continued fight against Islamic extremism, however there are concerns over the secrecy of the trials, which will be carried out by four judges, each one deciding the fates of hundreds. Defense lawyer Umar Ado said of the closed proceedings, “It sends the wrong signal that justice is not served or the process is compromised.” Ryan Cummings, an expert on travel safety in Africa based in South Africa, asks “Are they taking into account the fact that a lot of those who committed violence for Boko Haram did so under duress?”
