Winchester, VA – UPI reports that polling company Gallup released new data yesterday about weekly Mass attendance among American Catholics, and the results, while disappointing, are hardly surprising. The data shows that whereas weekly Mass attendance between 2005 and 2008 was at 45%, that number dropped to 39% between 2014 and 2017. Weekly church attendance by Protestants remained virtually unchanged, dropping a mere 1%. The steepest decline in Mass attendance was from the 1950’s to 1970’s, when attendance dropped from almost 75% to less than 50%. Older Catholics are less likely to attend weekly mass, and for the first time, there is not one generational group with a majority of members attending weekly Mass
