Winchester, VA – We hear their names every time the first Eucharistic Prayer is said during Mass… Lawrence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian… Just who are “Cosmas and Damian”? Cosmas and Damian were born in Arabia in the third century. They were twins, both physicians, who worked in Syria. They reportedly would accept no payment for their professional services and were called “the silverless.” As with so many of the saints we have covered, Cosmas and Damian were targeted during the Diocletian persecution and were hung on a cross, stoned, shot by arrows, and finally beheaded. Their three younger brothers were martyred as well. Cosmas and Damian are the patron saints of physicians. Saints Cosmas and Damian, pray for us!
