Winchester, VA – Normally the Annunciation falls on March 25, nine months before the Nativity of Our Blessed Lord, but because it fell on Palm Sunday this year, it was displaced by Holy Week and Easter week. The Annunciation commemorates the visit of the Archangel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary in which he declared her full of grace, and presents God’s plan to send His son to the world through her womb. Our Lady’s response to Gabriel was “I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.” It was then that the Holy Spirit overshadowed her and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. Pour forth we beseech the O Lord, thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His passion and cross come to share in the glory of His resurrection.
