Winchester, VA – UPI is reporting that according to a report by investigator and attorney Ulrich Weber, 547 cases of abuse were documented at the Regensberger Domspatzen Catholic choir school between 1945 and 2015. 67 of the 547 cases involved sexual abuse. The other abuses which took place were corporal in nature, such as ear-twisting and beatings with objects such as canes. Former students described the school as “a prison, hell and a concentration camp,” and their years there as the darkest period of their lives. Of note is that the school was run by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s brother, the now 93 year old Georg Ratzinger, between 1964 and 1994. While he confessed to having permitted the corporal punishment, and asked forgiveness for it, he was unaware of any sexual abuse occurring at the school. The diocese has set up a fund to deliver financial compensation to the victims.
