Winchester, VA –Â The Daily Mail this past weekend reported on the sad plight of some 40,000 child miners living in the Congo, some as young as four. They slave for a wage of ten cents a day, inspecting rocks with their bare hands looking for brown streaks which indicate the presence of cobalt, the prime ingredient in electric car batteries. The work is not without its risks. The children are in danger of developing a dangerous lung condition, skin disease, and their eyes burn from the toxic red dust. The fact that England has recently pledged to make a complete switch to electric cars by 2040 means that the numbers of these underaged miners could increase significantly. Each electric car uses 33 lb of refined cobalt, and almost every major manufacturer of electric cars buys their cobalt from the Congo.
