Winchester, VA – Born in Lourdes, France in January 1844, Bernadette Soubirous was the oldest of nine children of poor, hardworking parents. She suffered with poor health most of her life, having dealt with cholera and extreme asthma when she was very young. In 1858, when she was 14, and while on an excursion to get firewood for the family, Bernadette was visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary at the grotto of Massabielle. She would be visited by Our Lady for a fortnight, during which time the famous healing springs of waters would appear, and Our Lady would reveal herself to Bernadette as The Immaculate Conception. Bernadette would go on to take the religious habit at the convent of the Sisters of Charity in Nevers, France and contracted tuberculosis of the bone in her right knee. Even in her extreme suffering, she never lost sight of Our Lady’s request for penance, proclaiming, “all this is good for Heaven!” She died at the age of 35, while praying the Holy Rosary. St. Bernadette, pray for us!
