Summary: A family man is drafted to fight in a future war where the fate of humanity relies on his ability to confront the past.
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Chris Pratt can do no wrong in my book. In a land of emasculated men and beta roles he has been one of the few left to embody the classic masculine archetype of The King (provides protection, security, and order out of the chaos of the world). Whether it is in the MCU, Jurassic Park or in the The Tomorrow War Pratt continues to show why he is wildly popular in Middle America. Though this is a big box office sci-fi film, The Tomorrow War is driven not by sci-fi concepts, but by the timeless love of a father for his family.
It has been my experience that when sci-fi movies are made, the emphasis is on how far the envelope can be pushed (naturally). However, this can lead to paper thin plots at the expense of the all the fancy visual effects. The Tomorrow War does not lack in visual effect, however it doesn’t focus its energy on it. Instead these VFX’s and sci-fi concepts are used to tell a story of a family in trouble and their road to redemption. We say that the foundation of society is the family, and if the family is in trouble so is society. Only when Dan Forestor (Chris Pratt) heals his family can society be restored.
Christ Pratt is the best leading male in Hollywood today. Yeah that is a big statement to make, but the man doesn’t phone in a performance. Once again he is believable in both the action set pieces and quieter moments. The chemistry that he has with both Young Muri Forester (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) & Romeo Command (Yvonne Strahovski) is the key to the film and they all knock it out, and I will highlight Strahovski’s performance in a moment. The rest of the cast is well rounded. James Forester (J.K. Simmons – who is jacked BTW) delivers a solid performance, Emmy Forester (Betty Gilpin) rounds out the family, Charlie (Sam Richardson) steals every scene he was in and outside of Pratt, was the second most enjoyable character in the film, though some may find him annoying, I didn’t. Dorian (Edwin Hodge) rounds out the major players with a good performance of a jaded man facing his fate.
Maybe its my love for the TV Chuck but Strahovski’s has the stand out performance of the film. In regards to the runtime her time on screen is limited, but her role is crucial in order to drive the rest of the plot forward, and she nails it.
This film moves pretty well. There is very little time wasted and the runtime (2 hrs and 20 minutes) doesn’t few stretched out.
The plot is simple to comprehend, which is necessary in a film that employs time-travel as a plot device. Forester (Pratt) has to go 30 years into the future to help the human race and ends up saving himself as well. I will say that there was on “plot-twist” that I called when the first trailer came out, but that wasn’t a big shock overall.
The aliens in this film are very well created. Their design was unique to me and their behavior The looked great in daytime as well as night settings, showing that no money was spared on the visuals. As stated before, the VFX’s are well done. It makes me wish I could have seen this film in a theater, seeing on my TV at home just wasn’t the same.
While the film has a militaristic bend to it, it is not on the level of Michael Bay. In his films the military is almost another character.
Though this is a big box office sci-fi film, The Tomorrow War is driven not by sci-fi concepts, but by the timeless love of a father for his family.
Best Sci-Fi film I have seen in a while
