Winchester, VA – The Washington Times is reporting that federal district judge Mark A. Goldsmith has halted the deportation of 1,400 Iraqis until July 24. Despite Congress having given to the executive branch full control of deportations, Judge Goldsmith argued that because the Iraqis would be facing death, torture, or other grave persecution back home, he had to take matters into his own hands. He also expressed concern that, with 1,400 Iraqis being targeted at once for deportation, immigration lawyers would be too stretched to adequately provide defense for their clients.
