Winchester, VA – Saints Anne and Joachim are the grandparents of Our Blessed Lord. Their names were recorded in the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, dating to the mid-second century, and other early sources dating up to the sixth century include details about their lives. Joachim was a Galilean who settled down with Ann at the Sheep Gate of Jerusalem. They lived a charitable existence, but remained childless, which at the time was a sign of God’s judgment. After being turned away at the temple when he came to offer sacrifice, Joachim retired alone to the desert to increase in piety and charity. Years later, an angel appeared to them both and told them their prayers were heard and that they would have a child. It was then that the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary took place. Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us.
