As Pro Farmer Crop Tour scouts make their way through Iowa and into Minnesota today, it’s evident this Iowa crop was delivered one challenge after another throughout the season. If the derecho wasn’t bad enough, drought could be the real yield-robber for the state.

“We’ve seen decent states with the exception of Iowa, but Iowa is the gorilla in the room,” says Peter Meyer, S&P Global Platt. “We need to figure out how many bu. we lost to the drought, and how many we lost to the derecho. In my opinion, the drought is a bigger story than the derecho.”

Tip back, aborted kernels, flat pods and greensnapped and down fields greeted scouts in Iowa today. Where good yield potential was calculated, it was often met with high winds that mean harvest will result in losses. Where wind wasn’t always as apparent, drought stole precious bu.
