The Next ‘Superman’ Movie Will Have A Black Director And Black Actor

Warner Bros. has big plans for the next Superman movie. A Superman reboot produced by J.J. Abrams is currently in the works. And it’s going to be a major turning point for the superhero’s portrayal in cinema. The next film is set to star a Black actor as the DC character. A few weeks ago reports of author Ta-Nehisi Coates being roped in to pen the screenplay for the studio emerged. Now, Abrams is on the lookout for a Black director and star. Well, it’s about time!

As per reports on The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Studios and DC are “committed to hiring a Black director to tackle what will be the first cinematic incarnation of Superman featuring a Black actor,”

So far, reports suggest that the Superman movie won’t be a part of the core DCEU line-up but a new take on Kal-El. And it’s going to be unlike anything audiences have been before. For starters, it might be a period piece set in the 20th century and it’s going to be inspired by the original Superman comics. THR’s source said the film’s plot will be “in the vein of the original Superman comics and will have the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth,”. Of course, speculations of who will helm the project have begun. Many fans have nominated Oscar-winning director of Moonlight Barry Jenkins and One Night In Miami director Regina King. Two equally notable choices right there! Other names include J.D. Dillard and Shaka King.

While Michael B. Jordan was rumoured to be attached to star in the film, there hasn’t been any confirmation there. The currently untitled movie could also feature one of the many award-winning actors including Judas and the Black Messiah star Daniel Kaluuya who is fresh off his Best Supporting Actor win at the 2021 Oscars. But according to THR, the studio is looking to cast an unknown actor. This would be a great opportunity for the DC movie verse to introduce not just a new face but a new phase of movies.

The news of a Black Superman comes after a history-making Academy Awards ceremony that saw a record number of nominations for people of colour. In another comic book movie universe, Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally gave us a Black Captain America. It is amazing that Warner Bros. is taking notes and going with a race-bent casting.
