The Weapons of Cancellation

When discussing cancellation, certain words come to mind. “Troubling”, “offensive”, “problematic” – these terms are in frequent use in current popular culture and media, and their usage seems to be increasing by the day. Much like firearms they are completely innocuous and of no danger on their own, but can become immensely harmful depending on who is wielding them. In the right hands these words (again, like weaponry) can be employed for the protection of the innocent or in defense of the general moral good. But in the wrong hands, where they much more often lie these days, they can be deadly tools of destruction and disappearance.

The problem is in the discernment – who determines what is offensive or problematic? By what standards? And where does the line between the public good and personal responsibility get drawn?

Secular media and institutions today have largely taken the choice out of your hands. Personal responsibility in itself is now “problematic”. Yet conservatives and Christians cannot be absolved of all responsibility.

Today, as reported on Breitbart.com, Turner Classic movies has decided several classic films are “troubling and problematic.” Among them are “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, whose offense is that it starred Sidney Poitier, who has recently been vilified for being black, and yet having a largely white fan-base; “My Fair Lady” for possibly, vaguely misogynistic overtones from Rex Harrison’s character of Professor Higgins; and also Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”, for implying that “transgenderism” is linked to mental illness (imagine that).

There are other films slated by TCM to get the SJW-distorted hindsight treatment, but these mentioned should suffice to make the absurdity on display evident: Removing the differences in the sexes from “My Fair Lady” also removes the dynamic of the whole film, and the central conflict which drives the plot. But Cancel Culture crusaders would be happy to have the movie lose all its entertainment value and strip it of its diegesis just to see it transform into “My Fair Genderfluid Automaton”.

“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, released in 1967, was one of the first films to positively portray an inter-racial couple, and was for a long time considered a progressive film. But, as we frequently see, Progressives tend to outpace any of their “victories”, such that nothing is ever progressive enough for them. This points to the deeper problem of moral fluidity inherent in the Secular Leftist worldview.

“Psycho” is the one which particularly sticks in the Leftist craw. If a piece of media exists which even hints at the reality that an amorphous understanding of gender stems from mental illness, that piece of media must be destroyed. It is imperative for the Secular Leftist that all depictions of gender as being fixed are eradicated. In this way only propaganda which extols the inverse is free to be dispersed into the culture.

The responsibility for the current climate lies in part with those who hold traditional values insofar as we failed to hold the line and enforce these values as a barometer for what we will accept in our society. We succumbed to the boiling frog effect, where the diabolically-minded continually turned up the heat, in the form of introducing new degeneracies in and among our media and entertainment, and waited to see if we would push back. Sadly, we largely failed. We kept swallowing drops of poison in our glasses of lemonade, and pretended not to notice, since the rest of it still tasted good.

Our culture will continue to be poisoned morally until we make clear that we won’t stand for it. The old adage of voting with your dollar may never have been more important than it is now. Cut off the sewage pipes which are Netflix and Disney+. Start building a home library of physical media which conforms to your values, to true Christian morality. Give your dollar to those things which offend the disordered and diabolical, but do not offend God.
