Winchester, VA – The Associated Press reports that last night was a big night for the Democratic party, with gubernatorial wins in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the state of New Jersey. In Virginia, Democrat Ralph Northam, who has been acting Lieutenant Governor of Virginia since 2014 beat out Republican challenger Ed Gillespie, who ran a surprisingly tight campaign against Northam. The vote margins were 54%-45% Gillespie delivered an emotional concession speech, whereas Ralph Northam’s victory speech was interrupted by protestors.  Governor Elect Northam is an Army veteran who worked as a pediatric neurologist following his military career. He is a self-described “conservative on fiscal issues and liberal on social issues.” A 2009 attempt to get Northam to switch to the Republican party was unsuccessful. The positions of Virginia Lt. Governor and Attorney General also went to Democrats Justin Fairfax and Mark Herring respectively. In New Jersey, Democrat Phil Murphy beat out Republican Kim Guadagno 53%-45% to take over the seat of unpopular Republican Governor Chris Christie. A former United States Ambassador to Germany during the Obama Administration, the 60 year old Murphy worked in several high-level positions at Goldman Sachs for over two decades. In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio blazed into another term, beating his opponent Nicole Malliotakis 65%-29%
