Winchester, VA – Saint Bathildis was born around the year 626, an Anglo-Saxon who was born of an elite heritage. She was sold into slavery as a young girl  and served in the household of the mayor of the palace to King Clovis, the King of the Franks. The mayor of the palace wanted to marry Bathildis, as he had been widowed, but she was not amenable to that idea. She hid and bade her time until he did remarry. She then caught the eye of King Clovis, who asked her to marry him. She bore him three children, all of whom became kings: Clotaire, Childeric and Theuderic. Bathildis was a humble and modest queen, known for her charity and donations to the poor. She acted as queen regent to her son Clotaire after the death of King Clovis and did an admirable job. She abolished the trade of Christian slaves and worked to free children who were born into slavery. She died at the age of 66 in the year 680. St. Bathildis, pray for us!
