Winchester, VA – Born either in Catania or Palermo, Sicily around 231, Agatha hailed from a rich and noble family. She dedicated her virginity to God at a very young age, and at fifteen rejected the proposition of the Roman prefect Quintianus. In retaliation, Quintianus sent Agatha to a brothel, but Agatha was unmoved in her resolve to maintain her purity. She was then thrown into prison, at which time she underwent various excruciating tortures, including having her breasts cut off with pincers. After multiple dramatic confrontations with Quintianus, she was sentenced to be burnt at the stake. An earthquake prevented this, and she spent the rest of her life in prison. It is said that St. Peter appeared to her and healed all her wounds before her death in 253. St. Agatha, pray for us.
