Winchester, VA – St. Dorothy was born somewhere between 279 and 290, and although she is considered a martyr of the Diocletianic Persection, her death took place after his resignation. Dorothy was a virgin who was brought before the prefect Sapricius, who tried her, and ordered her to be tortured and put to death. On her way to her execution in 311, her pagan lawyer Theophilus mocked her, saying, “Bride of Christ, send me some fruits from your bridegroom’s garden.” And she did, for a six year old boy brought Theophilus her headdress, which was inundated with the scent of roses and fruits. Theophilus, moved, confessed himself a Christian as well, and died by the rack. The Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy, incidentally, takes as their occupation teaching, and the cultivation of flowers and produce. St. Dorothy, pray for us!
