Winchester, VA – Saint David is thought to have been born around 500 in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Solid historical information on him is scant, however he is said to have been the son of King Sant, and having studied under St. Paulinus, was ordained and became a teacher and preacher. He founded monastic settlements and churches in Wales, Dumnonia and Brittany. David founded a monastery at Menevia and he and his monks embraced the ascetical life, for example, restricting themselves to only water, and never wine or beer, despite their full days of heavy labor. His brothers had to pull their own plows, and were not permitted to use any beasts of burden. They had no personal possessions, and were not even permitted to speak of anything as their own. David was consecrated archbishop by the patriarch of Jerusalem, and is said to have invoked the council which rooted out what remained of the Pelagian heresy. He died around the year 589 in Menevia. St. David, pray for us!
