Winchester, VA – The Associated Press reports that in 2016, Parkland, Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz had been recommended by both school officials and a sheriff’s deputy for involuntary committal in order to undergo a mental evaluation. Incidentally, the sheriff’s deputy who recommended this course of action is Scot Peterson, the same one who was videoed standing outside the school while the Valentine’s Day massacre was taking place. Cruz could have been forcibly committed under Florida’s “Baker Act,” which permits involuntary commitment for mental health evaluations for a period of three days. Such a commitment, if officials would have followed through on the recommendation, could have barred Cruz from obtaining firearms, but the recommendation was not acted upon.
