Winchester, VA – The Daily Caller reports that a car bomb detonated in Kabul, Afghanistan by a suicide bomber killed dozens of government workers on a commuter bus early this morning. There was nothing left of the bus except for charred, mangled metal. Hundreds of miles away, Talibani militants simultaneously overran districts, demonstrating that the Taliban is still capable of mounting organized terror campaigns against the Afghan National Security Forces while also pursuing military operations against the U.S.-backed forces. The United Nations estimates that about forty percent of Afghanistan is currently under Taliban rule. In the spring, it was reported that the situation in Afghanistan was unstable and expected to worsen. Both Central Command commander General Joseph Votel and U.S. Forces Afghanistan commander General John Nicholson have expressed the need for thousands more troops to train, advise, and assist the Afghan forces. Secretary of Defense James Mattis is considering sending 4000 more troops, but would combine that effort with a political strategy to force reconciliation with the Taliban.
