Winchester, VA – The National Catholic Register reports that clergy and lay scholars wrote a letter to Pope Francis and delivered it to him at Santa Marta in early August. The letter was entitled “A Filial Correction Concerning the Propagation of Heresies” and sought to address points of concern among the clergy and lay scholars regarding Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, in addition to other words, deeds and omissions of the Pontiff. The signatories of the letter asked for a response from the Holy Father, and receiving none, released the contents of the letter on Saturday, September 23. This is the first time such a correction has been issued to a Pope since 1333, when Pope John XXII was admonished. The letter, 25 pages in totality, was broken down into three parts. The first part declares the duty the signatories have to issue their correction, and asserts that the infallibility of the Holy Father has not been contradicted, as the teachings in question were never promulgated infallibly. Part two of the letter addresses the specific passages of Amoris Laetitia where they have taken issue, and also the other words, deeds and omissions of the Holy Father which they think are “serving to propagate heresies within the Church.” The letter does mention that some claim the Amoris Laetitia passages in question can be interpreted in an orthodox way, however it points out instances where the Holy Father “beyond reasonable doubt wishes Catholics to interpret these passages in a way that is, in fact, heretical.” The third part of the letter digs into the roots of the current crisis, which the authors identify as modernism and the influence of Martin Luther. The notion that faith and morals are provisional and subject to revision was condemned by Pope Saint Pius X.  Those who wish to read the document for themselves can find it at www.correctiofilialis.org.
