Winchester, VA – Accuweather and the Weather Channel are reporting that winter storm Grayson is wreaking havoc upon the east coast. Yesterday it brought ice, snow, and slush to Florida, even causing some water parks to shut down. Flights were canceled at Wilmington International, Savannah/Hilton Head, and Charleston International airports. Icy road conditions caused accidents along I-95 and I-16 in Georgia and power was knocked out to 22,000 Georgia Power customers, and over 12,000 in South Carolina. Charleston, SC even reported over 5” of snow, making yesterday the third snowiest day in state history since recordkeeping began in 1938. The storm is going to be hammering the mid-Atlantic region today. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper have declared states of emergency for their respective states. Boston and New York City have closed their public schools today due to predictions of heavy snow. 90% of flights to and from La Guardia Airport have been canceled. Cities under blizzard warning include Norfolk, VA; Atlantic City, NJ; Portland, ME; Boston, MA, and Bangor, ME. To the west of the blizzards are winter storm warnings. Grayson is undergoing what meteorologists term “bombogenesis,” meaning that the atmospheric pressure is plummeting at a rate of 24 millibars or more over 24 hours. Grayson could be exhibiting one of the most rapid rates of bombogenesis associated with an East Coast storm, and this means that in addition to heavy snow, damaging winds, … battering waves and coastal flooding could pose a potential issue.
