A TREATMENT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED TO TREAT PREVIOUSLY INCURABLE PROSTATE CANCER

Winchester, VA – An estimated 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime, and 80% of men who live to the age of 80 will have prostate cancer cells in their prostate. With such sobering statistics, the Independent‘s revelation of a treatment for previously untreatable prostate cancer is all the more significant. Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research in London and the Royal Marsden hospital discovered that a treatment called “intensity modulated radiotherapy” was able to eradicate prostate cancer cells when used on cell which metastasized from the original tumor into the pelvic lymph nodes. In the IMRT treatment, the cancer cells are given radiation, but the surrounding healthy tissue receives no radiation. Side effects of the IMRT are minimal, and much reduced compared to conventional radiotherapy, which can damage the bowel. In the study of 447 men using IMRT, 71% of men—many of whom were deemed incurable at the start– were alive and cancer-free five years after treatment. After 8.5 years, 87% were alive with manageable side effects from treatment.
