Winchester, VA – Catholic daily journal La Croix is reporting that Munich’s Cardinal Reinhard Marx, head of the German bishops’ conference and a close advisor to Pope Francis, declared in an interview on July 14 that the Church should be less concerned about the legalization of homosexual marriage in Germany and more concerned about the Church having done nothing to repeal German laws which allowed the prosecution of homosexuals. Other insights by Cardinal Marx include

  • the imperative “to recall that the Church has not exactly been a trailblazer as far as the rights of homosexuals are concerned,”
  • counsel for conservative Catholics to resist seeing the new law as a “bursting dam” which will bring with it incest and three-way marriages
  • denial that this is a loss for the Church, because the concept of marriage and family is not just a Church matter
  • and an eagerness to see what the German Supreme Court thinks about “marriage for everyone.”
