Winchester, VA – The Associate Press reports that subtle changes in speech patterns over time may reveal progressive mental cognitive impairment, and could be a clue in early detection of conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. A study on this is being presented at the Alzheimers Association International Conference this week. Examples of the changes that can indicate mental decline are increases in fillers and in pauses. Here is an example of the same woman describing the same picture in 2013 and again in 2015, illustrating the changes in speech professionals are looking for to make an early detection of these conditions. President Ronald Reagan also went through a similar change in speech patterns before he was diagnosed with Alzheimers. Because there are no medications which can slow or reverse dementia, professionals are focusing on early intervention.
