Winchester, VA – Hurricane Nate made landfall in southeastern Louisiana late Saturday night, and then again in Biloxi, Mississippi on early Sunday morning as a Category 1 hurricane.  It was the first hurricane to make landfall in Mississippi since Katrina in 2005. The Associated Press reports that over 100,000 residents in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Florida lost power in the storm, however no storm deaths or injuries have been reported. There had been questions about whether New Orleans’ pumping system would hold up amid the heavy rains, but the city fared out better than expected, such that Mayor Mitch Landrieu lifted the curfew which had been imposed on the city. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said, “Hurricane Nate had the potential to wreak havoc on Louisiana, but thankfully, we were largely spared major damage. National Hurricane Center forecasters are now watching a new low pressure system about 800 miles southwest of the Azores which has a 70% chance of formation both in the next 48 hours and in the next 5 days.
