IN TODAY’S LIVES OF THE SAINTS AND MARTYRS, IT IS A SPECIAL MARIAN FEAST DAY

Winchester, VA – Today is the Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The roots of this feast are found in the hierarchichal structure of the Davidic Kingdom. In Israel, the queen was not the wife of the king, but his mother. With Jesus being King of Israel—and of the universe- from the line of David, it follows that the Blessed Virgin Mary would be the Queen. Pope Pius XII declared as much in his encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam in 1954, however Mary had been referred to as Domina, the feminine form of the latin dominus, meaning Lord, since the third century. The term “Queen” appeared around the sixth century and was in common use afterward. Holy Mary, Queen of Heaven, pray for us!
