Winchester, VA – Michaelina Hordashevska was born in 1869 in current-day Ukraine, a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Rite. At 18, she began to consider a vocation to the contemplative religious life. Under spiritual direction of a Basilian monk, she took a private vow of chastity for three years. Her spiritual director, Father Jeremiah Lomnytsky, suggested to her that there was a need for an active order of religious sisters to meet the social needs of the times, and asked Michaelina to found this order. She agreed, and spent time with the Polish Felician Sisters to get a feel for the active consecrated life. When she returned to found the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, she took the name Josaphata in honor of the Ukrainian martyr St. Josephat. Mother Josaphata spent the rest of her life guiding the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate in the roles of Superior General and Vicaress General. She was known for visiting the sick, teaching, and visiting the needy, and also for promoting Byzantine chant. In 1912 she was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the bone and died in 1919 at the age of 49, on the day she had foretold, amidst terrible suffering. Saint Josephata Michaelina Hordashevska, Pray for us!
