Winchester, VA – Saint Paul, born Saul, was the prized student of Rabbi Gamaliel. He eagerly assisted in the persecutions of the early Christians. The Acts of the Apostles tells us that he would enter house after house, dragging out men and women and handing them over to be imprisoned. While on the way to Damascus, he was knocked off his horse and struck blind, he encountered Jesus, who told Saul to stop persecuting him, thereby identifying himself with his followers. As Jesus instructed him, Saul went into Damascus, and after three days was visited at the house of Judas by Ananias, who restored his sight and baptized him. Saul would then go to Arabia for a time, and then returned to Damascus. His encounter with Jesus would lead to his becoming the Apostle to the Gentiles until his beheading in Rome, around 64 AD. Saint Paul, pray for us!
