Winchester, VA – Born into the noble family of Leopardi in Umbria, Saint Berard lived in the early 13th century and was one of the earliest Franciscian friars, being received into the order by St. Francis himself in 1213. He was fluent in Arabic and had the holy gift of preaching. With four other Franciscans, he was chosen to go to Morocco to evangelize the Muslims. The only one of the five who could speak Arabic was Berard and his bold preaching both for the Gospel of Christ and against the religion of Islam not only made him and his fellow Franciscans appear to be insane, but it also got them thrown into prison. Saint Berard and his companions enraged the Moorish king such that he beheaded them personally with his scimitar. Sts. Berard and his companions, were the first Franciscan martyrs. Saints Berard and companions, pray for us!
