Winchester, VA – In health news…One in seven people experience regular migraines, and they are three times more common in women than in men. The BBC reports that a new approach to migraines is helping some people cut the amount of migraines they experience in half. The new treatment uses antibodies to alter the activity of a chemical in the brain. The chemical in question, calcitonin gene-related peptide, or CGRP for short, has been identified as the culprit involved in both pain and sensitivity to light and sound during migraine attacks. Four drug companies are working hard to develop an antibody to neutralize CGRP, whether by working the chemical itself or with the part of the brain with which it interacts. The researchers at King’s College Hospital are calling the development a “huge deal.”
