Winchester, VA – Early in May, advisors to President Trump issued warnings about the lack of security in Afghanistan. The accuracy of their warnings was evident as news broke of a massive truck bomb which exploded near the diplomatic district of Kabul. Close to the epicenter were the German Embassy, Afghan presidential palace, supermarkets and retail outlets. 90 people were killed and over 300 were wounded, mostly civilians. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack, but a spokesman for the Taliban told Al Jazeera that they were not responsible for it. The location of the attack was highly unexpected, for it is a highly monitored area with security controlled points. Mustique Rahim, an independent analyst and security commentator told Al Jazeera, “Heavily loaded vehicles are checked thoroughly and usually they are not allowed to pass through these areas without prior clearance from the security forces.”
Catholic News Agency reported that Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin issued a telegram on behalf of Pope Francis condemning the morning rush hour terror attack. The telegram stated, “Having learned with sadness of the abhorrent attack in Kabul and of the many dead and seriously injured, Pope Francis expresses his heartfelt condolences to all affected by this brutal act of violence” The telegram assured the Afghani people of Pope Francis’ prayers for the souls of the deceased, and for peace.
