Winchester, VA – NPR reports that the Navy has announced the candidacy of women for two elite special operations jobs which were formerly only open to men. One of these women is a Navy SEAL officer candidate and the other is on a trajectory to becoming a special warfare combatant crewman. They will have to undergo the same rigorous training that the other SEAL candidates endure, and approximately 74% of enlisted candidates do not make it through. The success rates for SEAL officers are higher, around 65%. It has been over 18 months since the Pentagon cleared the way for women to hold combat positions, but  Lt. Cmdr. Mark Walton, spokesman for the Naval Special Warfare Command said that it could be months and potentially years before the emergence of first female SEAL or SWCC graduate.
