Winchester, VA – The Gatestone Institute is reporting that the future of the Cathedral of Córdoba is in doubt. A Christian basilica for hundreds of years before Muslims  destroyed it and turned it into the Great Mosque of Cordoba in 714, it was re-consecrated after the reconquest under King Ferdinand III in 1523. Muslims have long-eyed Cordoba as the lost caliphate, and have wished to turn the Cathedral in to a Mosque, much as they did with Saint-Denis in France and Turkey’s Hagia Sophia. It appears the militant secularist Spanish Government is on their side, declaring that “religious consecration is not the way to acquire property” and stating that they wish to turn the Cathedral into “a meeting place for the meeting of faiths.” Ready to fund this initiative are Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The bishop of Cordoba Demetrio Fernandez has sent out appeals for funding to maintain the Cathedral, as Andalusian law permits the government to expropriate the cathedral if they perceive it is not being properly maintained. He said, “sharing the space with Muslims would be like a man sharing his wife with another man”.
