Winchester, VA – When it’s your time, it’s your time, and it certainly was not the time for Archbishop Samir Nassar, the Maronite Archbisbishop of Damascus, Syria last week. Catholic World Report reports that the Archbishop had been napping in his bed on January 8, when he got up to go to the bathroom. While at his sink, a bomb hit his bed and exploded. Archbishop Nassar said to Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need, “Providence watches over his little servant, but now I am exiled like 12 million Syrian refugees who have nothing left.” The shell that hit his bed was one of 10 that fell that day in Damascus. Also damaged were the doors of the cathedral, windows, fuel tanks, water tanks, and the electric. The Sisters of Jesus and Mary convent was also damaged, and 7 people were hospitalized from the convent. Sister Annie Demerijian said, “It was the providence of God that we were not in the room.” Indeed it was. Thanks be to God.
