Winchester, VA – As a result of what has been billed as India’s worst monsoon season in a very long time, the death toll in the northeastern city of Bihar has climbed higher than 500 people. Because the nation lacks the sophisticated infrastructure and emergency services that places like Houston, Texas have, the human cost to these events tends to be significantly higher. In India, Bangladesh and Nepal combined, over 1,200 people have perished from the monsoon. Thousands of villages have been swept away, along with food resources, and lack of clean water will give rise to water-borne diseases. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released a $78 million relief package to aid the 17 million who have been affected by the monsoon this year.
