Winchester, VA – Forbes reports that scientists are predicting an uptick in the amount of large earthquakes throughout the world during 2018. This is why: Earth’s rotation follows a cyclical pattern, and slows down for a few milliseconds each day, then speeds up again. Scientists now believe that this slowdown in the earth’s rotation is related to a cyclical increase in earthquakes. Upon analysis of every earthquake since 1900 of a magnitude of 7 or greater, it was found that every 32nd year saw an increase in the amount of significant earthquakes worldwide. Puzzled, they then looked through historical datasets, and noticed only one showed a strong correlation with the increase in earthquakes. The scientists discovered that every 25-30 years, the Earth’s rotation slows down and this slowdown occurs right before an uptick in earthquakes. The slowdown happens for five years, and it is that fifth year which triggers the earthquakes. 2017 is the fifth year of the five year slowdown in rotation for this cycle and therefore scientists are saying, “Look out!” in 2018.
