The gang talks about the prosecution’s near complete lack of evidence in their murder case against Karen Read.

EPISODE 3

January 29

6am – Kerry Roberts, Jennifer McCabe and Karen Read find O’Keefe unresponsive in the snow.

Police find the glass O’Keefe is seen leaving the bar w/ along w/ blood they collect in Red Solo Cups.

7:59am – O’Keefe is pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital

6pm – Massachusetts State Police recover 3 pieces of plastic consistent w/ Read’s taillight. According to testimony from Lt Kevin O’Hara, 6-7 pieces are found in the snow, as well as O’Keefe’s sneaker, AFTER the scene is left unsecured for hours.

January 31, 2022 – Autopsy is completed on O’Keefe. Cause of death was blunt impact injuries to the head and hypothermia.

February 1, 2022 – Karen Read is arrested on charges of manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly crash.

February 4, 2022 – Kenneth Berkowitz, then Chief of Canton PD finds more apparent pieces of the taillight in the vicinity of the Fairview home. State police respond and secure the evidence.

May 2022 – The Albers rehomed their German Shepard Chloe after 7 years of owning her. They rehomed her to Vermont and she now goes by Cora.

June 9, 2022 – Norfolk County announces a grand jury has indicted Read on 2nd degree murder charges.

September 29, 2022 – Brian Higgins disposes of his SIM card and cellphone at the Cap Cod Military base. He dismantles his phon puts the SIM card in one bag and the cell in another and dumps them in DIFFERENT dumpsters on the military base.

April 2023 – The Alberts sell the 34 Fairview Road home in Canton Massachusetts for $50k less than asking price.

October 23, 2023 – Aidan Kearney – Blogger known as Turtleboy is arrested on charges of witness intimidation and conspiracy.

February 26, 2024 – Judge Beverly Cannone delays the start of the trial from March 12 to April 16 after the Federal prosecutors release over 3,000 pages of NEW evidence.

June 5-10, 2024 – Trooper Yuriy Bukhenik – Notes in court that the video of of Read’s SUV at the Canton Police Department’s sally port is INVERTED.

June 24, 2024 – Retired medical examiner and forensic pathologist Dr Frank Sheridan testifies that O’Keefe’s wounds were NOT consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

ARCCA Reconstruction – Dr Daniel Michael Wolfe and Dr Andre Rentschler – indicate the damage to Read’s vehicle and the nature of O’Keefe’s injuries do NOT suggest she fatally hit him.

March 2025 – Michael Proctor was terminated for his inappropriate texts about Karen. He is fighting  his termination.

June 2, 2025 – Dr Marie Russell, dog bite expert.

Karen Read FIRST Trial April 29, 2024 – July 1, 2024

• Took 5 days to seat jurors.
• Juror issues – the verdict slip was a potential source of confusion to the jury, particularly regarding the drunken driving manslaughter charge. They also didn’t understand they could be hung on some of the charges and not on others. They thought they had to be unanimous on all charges. They deliberated for 5 days and trial ended in hung jury.
• * Read told officers when she found O’Keefe’s body she found a piece of glass in his nose, when she pulled it out she said it gushed blood.

Prosecution’s Case 

• The prosecution alleged that Karen Read intentionally struck John O’Keefe with her car, killing him, following a night of drinking.
• Evidence presented included pieces of a broken taillight from Read’s SUV, which contained O’Keefe’s DNA.

Defense’s Case

• The defense argued that O’Keefe went inside the home of Brian Albert and was injured there before being found dead outside. 
• Key points of contention included the handling of the crime scene by police and the validity of the forensic evidence, such as the alleged damage to Read’s vehicle. 
• The defense also suggested a cover-up attempt by those involved. 

Key Developments & Verdict

• The trial lasted more than 30 days, with significant testimony, including from witnesses who provided conflicting accounts of the night. 
• The first trial concluded in July 2024 with the jury declaring themselves deadlocked after four days of deliberation, leading to a mistrial on all charges. 
• Some jurors later reported that they had been in agreement on the second-degree murder and leaving the scene charges, but could not reach a consensus on the manslaughter charge.

Karen Read SECOND Trial April 1, 2025 – June 18, 2025

• Took 10 days to seat 18 jurors. 600 people showed up to be interviewed and 18 were chosen so only 3% made it to the jury.
