Winchester, VA – Crux is reporting on an interview they held with Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, the president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, in which he describes the new trajectory in which he is leading the Academy. Paglia is taking a missionary approach to the PAL, viewing the church as a field-hospital which goes throughout the world, witnessing to the Gospel of mercy and convincing as many people as possible to live lives of mercy. He says that the Academy had formerly focused on abortion and euthanasia, but that this focus was too narrow and was a symptom of the Church’s being a “self-referential” ghetto. He now seeks to address issues such as small arms trade, the death penalty, human trafficking, assisted reproduction techniques, environmentalism, and gun control. Archbishop Paglia says the Academy has been re-reading the book of Genesis in light of current cultural challenges, and sees their top priority as fulfilling God’s two commands to mankind: to care for the environment and to create a familial culture of life which will extend from the family, to the city, to the nation.
