Winchester, VA – Born in 1256 in Germany, Gertrude was enrolled in the Cistercian monastery school of Helfta in Saxony at the tender age of four. She was taken care of by the younger sister of the abbess, who had great influence on her, and went on to join the Benedictine order at Helfta. At 25, Gertrude began to experience visions which would continue for 20 years until her death, making her one of the greatest mystics of the 13th century. Gertrude had a great devotion to the souls in purgatory, and a few of her writings still exist today, most notably her work entitled The Herald of Divine Love, which contains some of her visions. Gertrude is the only female saint to be given the title “The Great”. She died in 1301. St. Gertrude the Great, pray for us.
