Most Americans want Biden to ‘consider all possible’ SCOTUS nominees: Poll

More than three out of four Americans believe President Joe Biden should “consider all possible nominees” for the new Supreme Court vacancy, rather follow his pledge of only considering black women as nominees, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll.
Justice Stephen Breyer, 83, announced his retirement last week, and President Biden reiterated his campaign promise to nominate “the first black woman ever” to the Supreme Court.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll, conducted Jan. 28-29, found that less than a quarter of Americans (23%) believe Biden should “consider only nominees who are Black women, as he has pledged to do.” Meanwhile, 76% of respondents said Biden should consider all options for nominees.
The responses vary by party lines. Among Republicans, 95% said Biden should “consider all” replacements for Breyer, while 54% of Democrats believe the same.
Americans are also split slightly by party lines as to whether the Supreme Court determines cases “on the basis of law” or “on the basis of their partisan political views.”
Forty-six percent of Republican respondents said cases were determined by law, compared to 32% of Democrats. However, 33% of Republicans say cases were determined by political views compared to 52% of Democrats.
